Which Islands Are Open During Low Season 2023?

As we settle comfortably into Phuket’s low season, spanning from May to October each year, there are numerous reasons to take a luxury speedboat journey with 5 Star Marine to the islands surrounding Phuket during this period. While the weather may be less predictable with higher chances of rainfall, the allure of this off-peak season gives unique advantages and captivating experiences.

During low season, there are fewer tourists, meaning less crowds when you take a day trip to discover hidden gems. You get to enjoy a trip with 5 Star Marine to incredible viewpoints, tropical beaches, hidden caves and picture-perfect islands with more tranquillity. Additionally, you are able to carve out a bespoke itinerary which is perfect for you and your friends / family as all our speedboat day trips are customisable; meaning that you have the chance to explore at a more relaxed pace, without the peak season crowds.

Here is some inspiration to embark on a tropical island adventure during low season:

Phi Phi Islands

This beautiful archipelago consists of six small islands off Thailand’s coast, with Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Leh serving as the main attractions.

Renowned for their awe-inspiring landscapes, turquoise waters and white sandy beaches, the Phi Phi Islands have much to offer. With a Phi Phi day trip, you will get the freedom to explore these islands at your leisure, tailoring your itinerary to match your interests and desires. Whether you seek snorkeling adventures, refreshing swims or beach time relaxation, our experienced team can assist in crafting the perfect day.

Consider a visit to Monkey Beach, where playful macaques eagerly welcome you, or indulge in a picnic lunch and snorkelling amidst vibrant coral reefs and tropical fish at Bamboo Island. If you crave the serenity of a hidden cove with emerald-green waters, a refreshing swim in Pileh Lagoon offers the perfect opportunity.

Phang Nga Bay

Venture into the captivating realm of James Bond Island, nestled within Phang Nga Bay, and discover why it holds an esteemed place among the most iconic destinations. Made famous by the 1974 film “The Man with the Golden Gun,” this limestone paradise continues to mesmerize visitors. Experience the renowned Phang Nga Bay and James Bond Island private day trip with 5 Star Marine for a memorable adventure.

As boats cannot approach the protected marine area too closely around James Bond Island, the nearby Koh Ping Ghan serves as an ideal vantage point for capturing memorable photographs of the famous island. Here, a striking leaning rock stands tall, complemented by inviting caves to explore.

Afterward, immerse yourself in some exciting sea canoeing—a great way to see Phang Nga Bay up close and personal. Navigate through narrow tunnels, enter hidden caves and discover serene lagoons. James Bond Island and its surrounding wonders await, offering a day trip with 5 Star Marine filled with breath-taking sights and cherished moments.

Racha Islands

If you want to escape to paradise, we recommend a private speedboat day tour to Raya or Racha Islands, providing you with a personalized experience tailored to your desires. These islands provide a stunning day trip location to relax and truly step back and appreciate nature.

Offering a harmonious blend of peaceful, serene settings together with incredible marine life and some of Thailand’s finest snorkelling areas. Discover secluded tropical white powdery beaches and crystal-clear blue seas, unveiling the natural beauty of this area.

Located under 1 hour from 5 Star Marine’s base in Boat Lagoon, you can relax and unwind at the Racha Islands, enjoying peaceful nature walks, serene beach time and world class snorkelling. If you would like to concentrate on some incredible snorkelling spots, our crew know some of the most impressive areas including Siam Bay, which is located on Koh Racha Yai and is renowned for its exquisite coral reefs and marine life including vibrant fish species and even sea turtles.

Khai Islands

For the ultimate in easy, or for a family friendly day trip from Phuket, one of the top locations includes the Khai Islands, which are a trio of small islands (Khai Nai, Khai Nau and Khai Nok). They are super convenient to get to, taking merely 20 minutes by private speedboat before arriving at your destination.

Savour every moment of your experience, at a leisurely pace. At 5 Star Marine, we prioritize your relaxation and encourage you to fully immerse yourself in the joys of the day trip. Enjoy your time shallow snorkelling right from the beach at the Khai Islands, and luxuriate in seeing fish swim right up close to you and being able to relish the experience based on your own timings.

For a fun lunch for groups of friends or families with smaller children, allow us to arrange a delightful beach picnic, providing a hassle-free and enjoyable dining experience.

Coral Island

Coral Island offers a plethora of exciting activities for both children and adults alike. It is a mesmerizing paradise celebrated for its crystal-blue waters and diverse marine life—a must-visit destination for snorkelling enthusiasts. Situated south of Phuket, Coral Island captivates with its vibrant coral reefs and thriving underwater ecosystems.

At the Banana Beach Club, you’ll discover a spacious, open-style restaurant serving a diverse selection of dishes. Indulge in a delightful meal amidst a vibrant atmosphere. Snorkl Mini Scuba Tank Review, IT WORKS, The Snorkl, Part 2

Snorkl Mini Scuba Tank Review

About a year or so ago we did a review video on a product called the Snorkl, which sold itself as “A shallow diving kit that lets you breathe freely under the surface with no bulky scuba equipment to get in the way of your exploring. No scuba certification is required. The starter kit, which includes a hand pump, sells for around $500 USD”

In the video we spent two days just trying to fill it up with air using the hand pump that was provided, and to be very honest it was no good at all. We couldn’t get any air into the tank using the hand pump and we came to the conclusion that it was a complete waste of time.

BUT

We had a few comments from a few people saying that this product was great and we just didn’t take it seriously or use it correctly. So, now we have done part 2 and this time we got some professional help thanks to the awesome team at H2O Sports here in Phuket, we had a tutorial on the tank, and how to fill it up and they gave us their feedback on mini scuba tanks for use in the leisure market.

Before all that let’s look at what we have:

What is a Mini Scuba Tank?

Snorkl Mini Scuba Tank ReviewExploring the mesmerizing beauty of the deep sea is an exhilarating experience. While traditional scuba diving equipment allows us to explore the underwater world, advancements in technology have introduced a new option for diving enthusiasts: mini scuba tanks.

One of the most significant advantages of mini scuba tanks is their portability and convenience. Unlike traditional scuba tanks, which are large and heavy, mini scuba tanks are compact and lightweight. They are designed to be easily carried and allow for hassle-free transportation, making them ideal for travelers or divers who prefer to be unencumbered by heavy equipment.

Mini scuba tanks are designed to be user-friendly, making them accessible to divers of all skill levels. They typically come with a simple regulator system that is easy to operate and maintain. Unlike traditional scuba diving equipment, which requires extensive training and certification, mini scuba tanks can often be used without formal diving qualifications, although it is still recommended to have some diving experience and knowledge.

Is the Snorkl Mini Scuba Tank any good?

Snorkl Mini Scuba Tank ReviewThe primary disadvantage of mini scuba tanks is their limited air supply. Due to their compact size, they contain significantly less air than traditional scuba tanks. The duration of your dive will be limited. But before all that you have to get air into the tank. So, the only way that we have found is to fill the mini scuba tank with a normal air tank, if you have one. The one we used from H2O Sports in Phuket was only 200 THB and it filled up our tanks over 10 times.

The marketing words on the Snorkel say that you get 10 minutes of air, but in our tests, you get 3 mins at the most.

So, is it any good? In our opinion the Mini Scuba Tank is not that good, however, it does have a use, and that use is as a backup tank.

Mini scuba tanks can serve as an emergency backup option during dives. They provide an additional air source that can be used in case of an equipment failure or when a diver unexpectedly runs out of air. This backup air supply can be a lifesaver in critical situations, allowing divers to safely ascend to the surface.

They have been using these mini scuba tanks for this purpose and it’s only in the past few years with the rise of people trying to make businesses grow quickly using crowdfunding that the Mini Scuba Tanks have been marketed to the leisure industry.

We have tried and it was fun for 1 or 2 minutes BUT with a mask and snorkel and some underwater breath training, you will have just as much fun and you won’t have to have a huge air tank with you to keep topping up your air.

Safety note:

Before embarking on any diving adventure, it’s crucial to prioritize safety and make an informed decision based on your experience level and diving requirements.

Phi Phi And James Bond On The Same Day – Is It Possible?

When you come to Phuket there are a few things that are on most peoples to do list. Beaches, Thai food, see an elephant, visit a Temple, see James Bond Island, and visit Phi Phi and walk on Maya Bay Beach.

The question is can you do them all?

Generally, yes you can, as most people when coming to Phuket are here for around 2 weeks and you can easily do all these things and more in 14 days.

BUT

What if you are not here for 2 weeks and your time is limited, or what if you have loads of other activities planned and you only have 1 day spare that you use to see as much of the surrounding Phuket islands as possible, what are your options?

One of our most popular tours is the Phi Phi and Phang Nga Bay combined Tour. This private boat tour means that in 1 day you will be able to head down to Phi Phi and get to walk on the stunning Maya Bay.

Maya Bay, Phi Phi is one of the best and most beautiful beaches in Thailand IF not the world. The beach was featured in the movie “The Beach” with Leonardo DiCaprio which was filmed over 20 years ago.

After you have had your “BEACH” moment you can head out to Pilah lagoon which many people don’t realize was also a backdrop used in the movie The Beach and offers stunning clear water to get that ultimate tropical sea selfie.

If you want to do some snorkeling on your tour then Phi Phi is the place to do this, before you head up to Phang Nga Bay and see the iconic James Bond Island.

Phang Nga Bay and James Bond Island

Before you get to see the amazing James Bond Island, whose name in Thailand as Ko Ta Pu, you can experience the spectacle that is Phang Nga Bay. This stunning bay offers you so much to see and do. The hundreds of caves alone could take you months to explore and that’s not to mention the stunning hidden lagoons and beaches or the stunning limestone Karsts that rise up from the emerald waters which you can explore up close by kayak.

But we are her to see the iconic James Bond Island

James Bond Island is one of the must do’s when you are on holiday in Phuket. The island that most people take their selfies in front of is what is called Ko Ta Pu, translated into English, which means Nail Island. This was the island that in the James Bond Movie “The Man with the Golden Gun” was the backdrop when James Bond and Scaramanga had their duel. The island that your private boat will drop you off is called Khao Ping Kan, but both are more commonly known as James Bond Island.

Once you have had that 007 experience it’s time to jump back on the boat and head back to the 5 Star Marine Phuket pier, but before your day is over, how about a stop on a tropical island to enjoy a drink and watch as the sun set behind Phuket. What a way to finish your awesome day.

So, to answer the question, Phi Phi and James Bond on The Same Day – Is It Possible?

With 5 Star Marine Phuket, Yes, it is.

Best Snorkeling Spots In Phuket

There is amazing snorkeling in and around Phuket, but where are some of the best places to go to really get that snorkeling experience? We have chosen 5 (ok seven as we couldn’t get it down to five) that we think are great spots and each has benefits depending on who you are, and what kind of snorkeling tour you are looking for.

These best snorkeling spots in Phuket are in no particular order.

Best Snorkeling Spot In Phuket #1 Similan Islands

Established as a national park in 1982, Similan Islands are an archipelago of 11 islands in the Andaman Sea, 70 km off the coast in Phang Nga Province.

This little archipelago is one of the most interesting snorkeling areas in the world, with stunning crystal-clear waters and an array of marine life. Its home to turtles and whale sharks (depending on the time of year).

The conditions for coral growth are ideal, with a minimum prevailing sea temperature of about 28°C and exceptionally clear waters. More than 200 species of hard coral alone have so far been identified in this area, while these islands have the greatest profusion of reef fish in Thai waters.

Best Snorkeling Spot In Phuket #2 Koh Haa & Koh Rok

If you are looking for something a little more exotic, lesser-known, and arguably as beautiful, (if not more), than the Similan Islands, then Koh Haa & Koh Roc is for you. These small islands are situated just south of Koh Lanta in the Mu Ko Lanta National Park.

For a very special experience, these two islands combine stunning water clarity with a diverse range of colorful marine life and corals and therefore offer some of the best snorkeling opportunities you can find. In season, you can also regularly see whale sharks between these islands too.

Best Snorkeling Spot In Phuket #3 Racha Island

The two tropical Racha Islands; Koh Racha Yai and Koh Racha Noi, are sometimes called Raya Island or even King Island. BUT the name doesn’t matter as these stunning Phuket tropical islands provide the ideal destination to enjoy nature with some of the best snorkeling reefs in Thailand and quiet, tropical white powdery beaches and crystal-clear turquoise waters.

The Racha Islands are comprised of two islands, Koh Racha Yai and Koh Racha Noi. (Yai means “big” in Thai and, noi means “little”). The islands possess crystal clear waters and white sandy beaches. They are very popular with divers and snorkellers, with challenging dive sites for advanced divers as well as plenty for beginners and snorkellers.

Best Snorkeling Spot In Phuket #4 Phi Phi

The Phi Phi islands are an archipelago of 6 islands, with the 2 main islands being Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Leh. These picture postcard islands are excellent tropical getaways in Southeast Asia and are one of the most popular private Phuket boat tours.

Phi Phi has pristine beaches, stunning limestone rock formations, and clear turquoise waters teeming with colourful sea life.

Best Snorkeling Spot In Phuket #4 Khai Islands

Two of them (Khai Nai and Khai Nok) have superb sandy beaches and incredibly clear water where swarms of colourful and friendly fish come to swim around you. This makes these two Khai islands perfect for those who have never tried snorkeling and would like to try, or for those who are a little nervous to snorkel in deep water. You are able to walk into the water and snorkel right from the beach, you don’t even need to float or swim as you will be able to explorer the underwater world while sanding.

Khai Nui might not have that tropical white sandy beach, or any restaurants, in fact it has nothing at all, BUT you can snorkel here and see an array of amazing marine wildlife, as well as drop in a line and hook and we can pretty much guarantee that you will catch something for either your dinner or the crew’s dinner.

Best Snorkeling Spot In Phuket #5 Mai Ton Island

Maiton Island is famous for its unspoiled nature and the spectacular underwater world, and the best things to do at Maiton Island all happen in the clear tropical waters around the island.

Maiton Island offers some fantastic snorkeling. The coral reefs are alive and teeming with a variety of tropical fish and you can also Enjoy a mesmerizing experience through a giant clam garden. The best time for snorkeling at Maiton island is from December to May when the sea around Maiton is crystal clear like a blue mirror.

Best Snorkeling Spot In Phuket #6 Coral Island

Coral island is known locally as Coral Island is a great place to visit especially if you like to explore the region’s diverse marine environment and visit different islands., but most people will call it Coral Island. Although being a small island, it has a lot to offer whether you’re looking for a place to relax or go on an adventure.

The island is surrounded by shallow coastal waters with beautiful coral reefs and colorful fishes. There are multiple snorkeling spots around the island.

When Is Maya Bay Closing?

LATEST NEWS: Maya Bay Will Close Again in 2024.

Full Details Here MAYA BAY CLOSING 2024

Maya Bay Closed – Full Details In this video:

Maya Bay History

Maya Bay, a breathtakingly beautiful cove nestled on the idyllic island of Phi Phi Ley, has long been considered one of the most iconic sites in the Phi Phi archipelago. Its turquoise waters, powder-soft sands and towering limestone cliffs have captivated visitors from around the world, earning it a reputation as a true paradise on earth.

However, it was not until the year 2000 that Maya Bay truly rose to worldwide fame; when it was chosen as the primary filming location for the blockbuster movie “The Beach,” starring Leonardo DiCaprio. The film’s plot centred around a group of travellers who sought to establish their own utopian sanctuary, free from the constraints and chaos of the modern world; and Maya Bay served as the perfect backdrop for this quest.

Since then, people have flocked to Maya Bay, eager to witness first-hand the stunning beauty and natural wonder that so enchanted Hollywood filmmakers, and it has become a must-see destination for anyone visiting the Phi Phi Islands.

Why Does Maya Bay Close?

Tourists were originally allowed to return in January 2022 after Maya Bay was closed for almost three and a half years (by order of The Department of National Parks Wildlife and Plant Conservation). The stunning Bay has been closed for a few months at a time since this point in order to aid continued rehabilitation efforts.

The area closes in an effort to help the recovery of marine life, coral reefs and underwater gardens. These periods also allow for infrastructure repairs on the island. Park authorities have previously planted new coral reef areas and additional trees have been positioned by the beach in order to help prevent erosion; all of this was as part of efforts to recover the whole area. The closures serve as a good reminder of the huge efforts that continue to go into restoring this area.

When Will It Close In 2023?

It is predicted that Maya Bay will once again close in order to undergo a period of natural rehabilitation from August 2023 (updated 13 May 2023). This will allow the delicate ecosystem to recover and flourish, ensuring that future generations can continue to enjoy this stunning location in its full glory.

However, fear not – This does not mean that you cannot still experience the beauty of Maya Bay on your Phi Phi Island private luxury speedboat Tour. While walking on the actual beach will not be permitted during this period of rehabilitation, you can still take in the incredible scenery from the comfort of our private speedboats. Marvel at the towering limestone cliffs, crystal-clear waters and white sands that have captured the hearts of travellers. In fact, this private boat tour offers a unique perspective on the bay, as you can enjoy the beauty of Maya Bay from the water; soaking in the serenity of nature in all its glory.

Responsible Tourism

After the rehabilitation closure period, when Maya Bay reopens once again, you will be able to see how the wildlife has returned and thrived; the bay is home to clownfish, lobsters and even blacktip sharks. The Marine Park continue to work tirelessly to get Maya Bay back to its previous paradise condition; so, at 5 Star Marine we ensure that our tours adhere to new rules and help demonstrate respectful tourism.

Similan Islands Set to Close in May, 2023

LATEST NEWS: Similan Islands Will Close Again in 2024.

Full Details Here SIMILAN ISLANDS CLOSING 2024

The Similan Islands are located off the coast of Phang Nga Province in the Andaman Sea. These islands are one of the most recognised island groups in the area, and they are renowned for having some of the world’s best coral reefs which makes them an incredibly popular snorkelling and scuba diving destination. The Similan Islands feature large rock formations on the coasts of a number of the Islands, which form a particular and memorable characteristic for this location.

The Time To Visit

With only a few weeks left to visit the spectacular Similan Islands before their scheduled closure, now is the last time to book your private tour with 5 Star Marine.

Similan Islands Closing

Every year, from May 16th until the 15th October 2023 (updated 27.04.2023), the Similan Islands are closed to visitors in order to safeguard the marine habitat and stimulate its recovery. The date changes slightly from year to year, but you can find the most up-to-date information here.

The closing time allows coral reefs, marine life and the beaches all to recuperate from the consequences of tourism; such as the pollution and physical harm which comes with it. This contributes to the Islands’ continued existence as a magnificent and sustainable natural attraction for future generations to enjoy.

In addition, the Andaman Sea receives harsh monsoon weather conditions at this time, which can cause strong waves and winds making for unsafe conditions for both boats and people to get to the islands.

Ecosystem Regeneration

The Similan Islands, despite their popularity, are a vulnerable ecology. Therefore, whilst they are open to visitors, from October each year, the National Park asks that all guests follow the set regulations in order to preserve these Island’s natural beauty. This includes taking care not to harm or disturb coral reefs, avoiding littering or polluting and only trekking on approved routes and walkways so as not to disrupt the delicate ecosystem.

Marine Life

Mu Ko Similan National Park encompasses an area of around 140 square kilometres and includes the Similan Islands. The park is home to a diverse range of marine life, including tropical fish, sea turtles and reef sharks in addition to various bird and mammal species.

Beautiful coral reefs and other rare marine life such as whales, dolphins and Moray eels may be found beneath the amazingly transparent turquoise seas. The coral and marine life in the Similan Islands is so diverse that it is estimated that there are over 500 types of hard and soft coral here.

With the Similan Islands plus so many other inspired day trips to select from, please contact us to discuss your requirements, or to book a bespoke private day trip itinerary.
