Exploring Phuket Town’s Thai Street Food | Phuket Vegetarian Festival 2024
Exploring Thai Street Food during the Phuket Vegetarian Festival
If you’re lucky enough to be in Phuket during early October, you’ll witness one of the island’s most vibrant, unique, and cultural events, the Phuket Vegetarian Festival. This incredible nine-day festival isn’t just a celebration of food; it’s an immersive cultural experience filled with street parades, rituals, and, most importantly, delicious vegetarian street food. Oh and some rather interesting, and some might say gruesome rituals….
At 5 Star Marine Phuket, we love showing our guests the hidden gems of the surrounding islands of Phuket but also of Phuket itself, and this festival is one of them! So, let’s look into what makes the Phuket Vegetarian Festival so special and why it’s a food lover’s paradise. Even if you are not a vegetarian, and as you will see if you watch the video on our YouTube channel, Jay Leshark is NOT a vegetarian.
What Is the Phuket Vegetarian Festival?
This annual festival, also known as the Nine Emperor Gods Festival, celebrates spiritual cleansing, good health, and abstinence from meat. Devotees follow strict dietary restrictions and engage in sacred rituals to purify their mindsand bodies. You’ll find participants dressed in white, parades featuring displays of devotional acts, and the streets of Phuket Town coming alive with color, noise, and tradition.
Now, at this point we should mention that the Phuket Vegetarian Festival can be a little gruesome and the parades can feature, we say can, they do feature devotees who have taken their deadocation to the next level. The religious devotees cut themselves with swords, piercing their cheeks with sharp objects and committing other painful acts to purify themselves. They pierce themselves as a way to express their gratitude to the gods as well as getting rid of their bad luck. We are not sure if having a needle or a bike frame, (yes it has happened) does get rid of bad luck, but hey it does make for some very interesting parades.
But the real star of the show for food lovers is the incredible street food on offer!
Vegetarian Street Food in Phuket Town
During the festival, Phuket Town transforms into a vegetarian foodie paradise, with streets lined with food stalls offering creative, plant-based dishes. Even if you’re not a vegetarian, the food here will amaze you with its variety, flavor, and freshness. Now, once again we should mention here, if you are looking for fresh salads and healthy snacks, then you might be a little disapointed. Much of the Phuket Vegetarian Street food is fried, both shallow fried, deep fried or just grilled with a lot of oil. However the Mango and Sticky rice is always a winner.
Here are some of the must-try street foods during the Phuket Vegetarian Festival:
- Crispy Spring Rolls (Por Pia Tod)
These crunchy treats are filled with vegetables and glass noodles, fried to golden perfection. Dip them in sweet chili sauce for the perfect snack on the go.
- Deep-Fried Tofu (Tao Hoo Tod)
Tofu lovers, rejoice! This dish is a festival staple – crispy on the outside, soft and fluffy on the inside. Enjoy it with a side of tamarind dipping sauce for an extra punch.
- Vegan Satay Skewers
These skewers are marinated in rich spices, grilled over open flames, and topped with creamy peanut sauce. Whether it’s mushrooms or tofu, you’ll love the flavor explosion!
- Spicy Noodle Soup (Guay Teow Jay)
For something more filling, try a bowl of Guay Teow Jay – a vegetarian noodle soup with tofu, herbs, and spicy broth. It’s a perfect way to recharge before continuing your festival adventure.
- Sweet Sticky Rice with Mango (Khao Niew Mamuang)
No Thai food experience is complete without dessert! Enjoy sweet mango slices with sticky rice, topped with coconut cream. It’s the perfect balance of flavors to wrap up your food tour.
Why the Phuket Vegetarian Festival Is a Must-Visit
The Phuket Vegetarian Festival is not just about food, it’s an immersive cultural experience. You’ll see street parades featuring firecrackers, traditional drumming, and processions of devotees performing sacred rituals. (remember the warning about the gruesome parts) Whether you’re in awe of the spiritual dedication or simply enjoying the incredible atmosphere, it’s an event that stays with you long after it ends.
At 5 Star Marine, we always encourage our guests to explore the cultural side of Phuket in addition to our Phuket island-hopping tours. The festival is a perfect opportunity to connect with local traditions and experience something truly unique.
Top Tips for Visiting the Phuket Vegetarian Festival
Dress in White: If you want to blend in with the locals, wear white clothing – it symbolizes purity.
Arrive Early: The food stalls can get busy in the evening, so head to Phuket Town early to beat the crowds.
Respect Local Customs: Avoid eating meat during the festival to honor the tradition, and be mindful of the rituals.
Stay Hydrated: With all the spicy food and heat, make sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day.
While the Phuket Vegetarian Festival is an unmissable event, there’s so much more to explore on the island! After indulging in street food, why not join us on a Phuket private boat tour to one of Phuket’s beautiful islands? Whether it’s snorkeling in the Phi Phi Islands or exploring the hidden gems of Phang Nga Bay, we’ll make sure your Phuket adventure is one to remember.
Book your private boat tour with 5 Star Marine and experience the best that Phuket has to offer, from delicious Thai street food to stunning island escapes.
How Is The Weather In Phuket Right Now? | November 3rd to 10th 2024
What to Expect from the Weather in Phuket This November
If you’re planning a trip to Phuket in November, you’re in for a treat! Not a Trick ‘n’ Treat as Halloween is over.
With the rainy season tapering off and the high season just starting, November weather typically strikes a beautiful balance, making it a fantastic time to explore Phuket and its surrounding islands. But as any tropical destination would, Phuket has its own weather quirks, microclimates, and fast-changing conditions that keep locals and visitors alike on their toes. Let’s dive into what you can expect this November and how to make the most of your time with 5 Star Marine Phuket!
Typical November Weather Patterns in Phuket
In November, the rainy season is usually on its way out, transitioning toward drier and sunnier days. Its known as the shoulder period.
Early in the month, there might be some showers, but the average rainfall is significantly less than the peak monsoon months, allowing for more stable weather conditions as the month progresses. Daytime temperatures generally range from 27°C to 32°C (80°F to 89°F), with humidity levels dropping as the rains ease, making it more comfortable to enjoy all that Phuket has to offer.
Though you may still see some light showers or overcast skies early in November, they’re typically short-lived, with bright sunshine often following closely behind. These refreshing rain showers also lend a lush, vibrant green to Phuket’s stunning landscapes – a bonus for anyone looking to capture beautiful photos and a top tip, Phnag Nga Bay loos stunning this time of year.
Microclimates in Phuket
We have said it before and we will keep saying it over and over, Phuket has many microclimates. Its one of the unique aspects of Phuket’s weather.
What are microclimates – small areas with their own distinct weather patterns.
Due to the island’s mountainous terrain, different parts of Phuket can experience completely different weather on the same day. It’s not unusual for Patong Beach to be basking in sunshine while, just a few miles away, clouds might be rolling over the hills around Kamala Beach.
These microclimates are fantastic because they make it easier to find a spot on the island with favorable weather. And if you’re on a private 5 Star Marine Phuket tour, our experienced captains know exactly where to go for the best conditions, tailoring each tour to make the most of Phuket’s weather on any given day.
Tips for Enjoying Phuket’s November Weather
1. Pack for Light Showers – Although November is generally drier, a lightweight rain jacket or poncho can come in handy for those brief, tropical showers that might roll in. 7/11 sell poncho’s just make sure you get the right size, and not the kids size, well unless you are a kid.
2. Plan Outdoor Activities Wisely – Schedule your beach trips and island tours early in the day when the weather is typically calmer. This is the perfect time to set out for a private island-hopping adventure with 5 Star Marine, whether you’re visiting the Phi Phi Islands or exploring Phang Nga Bay.
3. Stay Flexible – Since tropical weather can change quickly, it’s helpful to keep a bit of flexibility in your plans. And with a private tour, we can easily adjust our route to give you the best experience no matter what the weather brings!
4. Consider Early Evening Activities – November sunsets in Phuket are stunning. Book a sunset cruise to catch the skies turning shades of orange, pink, and purple, and you may even get lucky with clear skies for stargazing.
5. Take Advantage of YouTube Weather Updates – Be sure to check out our weekly weather updates on the 5 Star Marine YouTube channel! Hosts Shaun and Jay Leshark give you up-to-the-minute details on Phuket’s forecast, providing tips on the best times to plan your tours and how weather may affect your outings. It’s a great way to stay informed and make the most of your trip!

Phuket Weather UPDATE Storm Warning | October 26 -Nov 4 | Cyclone Dana
Phuket Weather Update: Effects of Cyclone Dana from the Bay of Bengal
The current weather in Phuket is experiencing some indirect effects from Cyclone Dana, which has developed over the Bay of Bengal and made landfall along the coasts of Odisha and West Bengal in India on Friday 26th October, 2024. Although Phuket lies far from the cyclone’s direct path, storms in the Bay of Bengal often influence weather patterns across the Andaman Sea and Thailand due to the interconnected nature of tropical weather systems. There are some long words there, but hopefully below we can explain.
However please do go and watch our weather update video as Shaun and Jay, well mainly Shaun, talks about the current effects on the weather in Phuket and what is going to happen with anyone wanting to go on a 5 Star Marine Private Tour.
Why Cyclones in the Bay of Bengal Affect Phuket
Tropical cyclones like Dana create intense low-pressure zones that influence nearby regions. This disturbance often triggers rain, gusty winds, and slight sea-level changes in the Andaman Sea, which borders Phuket.
Cyclones pull moisture from surrounding areas, leading to overcast skies, occasional showers, and choppy seas in locations like Phuket. As a result, Phuket may experience scattered rainfall and strong breezes during this period, even though the cyclone remains distant.
Tropical cyclones forming in the Bay of Bengal can slow the retreat of the monsoon, prolonging unsettled weather conditions across parts of Thailand.
What to Expect in Phuket
Unstable Weather: Over the next few days, expect occasional rain showers and gusty winds in Phuket, with some disruptions to sea conditions. This will impact our 5 Star Marine Phuket tours. We have messaged all our existing bookings to explain the situation, and if you are looking to go out on tour you still can, and we strongly recommend that you choose Phang Nga Bay as that area is more shelated from the winds which means less rough seas.
Talking of rough seas….
Boaters and tourists are advised to be cautious, as the Andaman Sea may experience higher waves and stronger currents due to the storm’s influence.
While the cyclone’s primary impact will be felt in India and Bangladesh, its effects underscore the importance of monitoring tropical systems in the Bay of Bengal, as they can shape weather conditions across the entire region, including Phuket, and that’s why we use Windy.com for checking on the weather coming from the Bay of Bengal. Watch the video and Shaun explains it all.
Stay updated by following our social media chanels and we will keep you fully updated on the weather in Phuket.
If conditions worsen, we will adjust schedules to prioritize safety.
Exploring Maya Bay on Reopening Day! | Is it over crowded?
Maya Bay in Phi Phi Reopens
After its annual 2-month closure for restoration and research on the last 12 months tourism affects, Maya Bay in Phi Phi, one of Thailand’s most iconic beaches, is officially open again! The 5 Star Marine Phuket team was super excited to be among the first to visit this breathtaking destination on reopening day.
In our latest YouTube video, which is out now, Jay Leshark, the charismatic host (He edited this to use that term, I had said something else) of the 5 Star Marine Phuket YouTube channel, takes you on a behind-the-scenes tour of Maya Bay. Jay and the team explored the stunning landscapes, crystal-clear waters, and the tranquil ambiance that this tropical paradise offers, without the usual crowds (well, almost)!

How Is The Weather In Phuket Right Now? | October 21st to 28th 2024
Phuket Weather in October
Whats the weather doing this week 21st to 28th October?
For up-to-date weather forecasts, you can now catch weekly weather videos from Shaun and Jay on the 5 Star Marine Phuket YouTube channel. In these videos, Shaun (the meteorologist—who’s not into meat, despite what Jay thinks! ) gives you a fun, reliable look at the week ahead so you can plan your adventures accordingly.
October Weather: A Mix of Rain and Sunshine
October is a transition month in Phuket, marking the shift from the rainy season to high season. You’ll experience:
- Occasional showers, often in the late afternoon or evening.
- Sunny spells, especially as the month progresses toward November.
- High humidity, which gradually reduces as the rainy season comes to an end.
While the weather may seem unpredictable, rain showers in Phuket tend to be short-lived, often followed by clear skies. It’s always a good idea to carry a light rain jacket, which you can buy really cheaply from every 7/11 on the island or umbrella.
Phuket’s Microclimates: Rain Here, Sunshine There
One of the most fascinating aspects of Phuket’s weather is its microclimates. These small, localized weather patterns mean that it can be:
- Raining in Patong Beach while Phuket Town enjoys sunny skies.
- Pouring on one side of the island, yet completely dry on the other. We have even seen it wet on one side of the road and bone dry on the other.
This means you can easily chase the sun if the weather turns gloomy in one area—something our private boat tours at 5 Star Marine Phuket are perfect for!
How to Make the Most of October Weather in Phuket
Since the weather can vary from place to place, here are a few tips for enjoying your time:
- Flexible Plans: Stay open to changing your itinerary based on the weather forecast.
- Outdoor Adventures Early: Mornings tend to be the driest and sunniest, so it’s a great time for activities like island hopping or snorkeling tours. To be fair thou you can snorkel in the rain. The fish don’t mind a few drops of sunshie falling from the sky.
- Explore Local Attractions: If it’s raining, take the opportunity to explore indoor activities like temples, museums, or cafes in Phuket Town.
And don’t forget—Shaun and Jay’s weekly weather updates are your best bet for staying ahead of the weather curve.
Be sure to check out the 5 Star Marine Phuket YouTube channel for the latest weekly weather forecasts. Shaun and Jay will give you a fun and informative outlook so you can make the most of your time on the island. If you have any specific weather questions, feel free to leave a comment on the video, and Shaun will get back to you with the latest insights.
October is still a wonderful time to explore the island. Whether you’re looking to soak up the sun or embark on an adventure—5 Star Marine is here to help you plan the perfect day.
Lisa 2: Our Phuket VIP Sports Cruiser is BACK!
Lisa 2 was originally built right here in Phuket. Although we only brought her into the 5 Star Marine fleet in 2023, we didn’t hesitate to give her a FULL refit this year, taking her back to her bare bones to ensure she’s in top condition for your next adventure.
With a unique design that sets her apart from the rest of our fleet, Lisa 2 is our VIP cruiser, perfect for those seeking something extra special. Whether you’re planning a romantic sunset cruise or a private couple’s tour to Phi Phi or Phang Nga Bay, Lisa 2 is the ideal choice.
Why Do We Refit All Our Boats?
During Phuket’s low season, we spend a minimum of 20 days on each of our private speed boats performing a complete refit. This includes stripping off all the paint from the hull, repairing any damage, and then repainting with a fresh layer of antifouling. We remove all seat cushions, which are sent to a specialized factory to be cleaned and upgraded with new foam. The deck is refinished, repainted, and sealed. Even the engines receive a full service and refit, while the roof and all chrome detailing are maintained or replaced as needed. And yes, even the sound system gets a refit to ensure your favorite tunes sound as good as the views.
Lisa 2, our VIP Sports Cruiser, is no exception to our rigorous maintenance standards.
Luxury Aboard Lisa 2
Onboard Lisa 2, luxury surrounds you. Relax in the plush, extra-padded seating, or sip your favorite drink kept chilled in the onboard icebox. If you’d prefer to escape the tropical sun, a brand-new covered area offers shade, while the sun deck at the front provides comfortable seating and breathtaking views for sun-seekers. Lisa 2 is the crown jewel of our fleet and the perfect companion for island hopping around Phuket, Phang Nga Bay, and Phi Phi.
Why Choose a Private Tour on Lisa 2 with 5 Star Marine Phuket?
A private boat tour with 5 Star Marine on Lisa 2 means crafting your perfect day at sea. Whether you’re snorkeling vibrant coral reefs, enjoying a beach picnic on soft white sands, discovering hidden gems, or swimming in turquoise lagoons, the day is yours to design. Maybe you want to canoe through mysterious caves or take in panoramic views from spots like Hong Krabi. With Lisa 2, the possibilities are endless—all experienced in absolute luxury.

How Is The Weather In Phuket Right Now? | October 14th – 21st 2024
Phuket Weather in October
This October we started our brand new weekly weaher update which we post on our YouTube channel evenr Monday, and embed into this blog so take 10 mins to see what the weather will be like from Monday the 14th of October to Monday 21st of October. But for now lets take a look at October’s weather here in Phuket.
October Weather Overview in Phuket
October is part of Phuket’s transition from the rainy season to the dry season, making the weather slightly unpredictable. In the travel industry this is what we call the shoulder period and from our point of view it’s a great time to visit Phuket.
This period in Phuket still offers plenty of beautiful days to explore the islands.
- Temperature:
Expect warm days with average temperatures between 25°C to 31°C (77°F to 88°F) – perfect for beach and boat adventures! - Rainfall:
Yes, it might rain, but it usually comes as short, refreshing showers. These tropical rains often happen in the late afternoon or evening, meaning you’ll have plenty of sunshine during the day for your activities. - Humidity:
Phuket can feel a little humid in October, but a cool ocean breeze on one of our 5 Star Marine boats makes it much more comfortable. More so if you are sat on the front, yes it will mess your hair up, but hey, salty hair, just don’t care.
Why October Is a Great Time to Visit
Fewer Crowds:
October is the tail-end of the low season, so you’ll enjoy quieter beaches and less crowded attractions – perfect for those looking for a more relaxing experience.
Lush Green Landscapes:
The recent rains leave Phuket’s islands looking extra green and vibrant. Places like Phang Nga Bay and James Bond Island are at their most beautiful, with lush vegetation and waterfalls flowing.
Affordable Travel:
Since October is just before the high season kicks in, flight deals and hotel discounts are easier to find. You’ll get the same incredible experiences without the peak-season price tags.
Flexible Touring:
With fewer tourists in Phuket, you have more flexibility with tours. At 5 Star Marine Phuket, we customize our itineraries to suit the weather, making sure you get the best experience possible, even if we need to adjust your trip slightly.
Best 5 Star Marine Tours to Enjoy in October
October is a great time to explore Phi Phi Islands, with fewer visitors at Maya Bay and Pileh Lagoon. Snorkel in crystal-clear water, enjoy the peaceful surroundings, and feel like you’ve got the islands all to yourself. It can get a little bumpy so do check with us before you go. It might not be the best location for younger children.
Phang Nga Bay looks magical in October – misty cliffs rising out of emerald-green water, hidden caves to explore by kayak, and fewer boats at James Bond Island. Even if a little rain comes, it just makes the scenery more dramatic!
For a truly unique experience, join our bioluminescence tour. Head out in the late afternoon, enjoy dinner on a floating restaurant, and watch the sea light up with glowing plankton after dark. Rain or shine, this magical phenomenon is a must-see!
Tips for Island Hopping in October
- Bring a Light Rain Jacket:
Though most rain showers are short, it’s always a good idea to have a light rain jacket or poncho with you, just in case. - Don’t Forget Sunscreen:
Even with some cloud cover, Phuket’s tropical sun can be intense, so make sure to apply sunscreen regularly throughout the day. Oh, and make sure its REEF SAFE. - Flexible Scheduling:
Since the weather can be a bit unpredictable, it’s best to stay flexible with your plans. We monitor weather conditions closely to ensure you get the best experience, adjusting departure times or destinations as needed. - Enjoy the Moment:
If it rains, embrace it! A little rain won’t spoil your day – in fact, some of the best snorkeling and sightseeing happens just after a quick rain shower, when the sea feels even more refreshing.
