The Best Private Tours In Phuket

What Are The Best Private Tours In Phuket, Thailand?

I am often asked by our guests which of the Private Tours we offer I would recommend to them.  The answer is always a little more complicated than simply selecting one tour.  Over the 16 years I have lived here in Phuket my personal favorite Private Tour has changed.

When I first came to Phuket I thought that the Phi Phi Island Private Tour was by far the best tour you could do.  Swimming, snorkeling, amazing beaches, and a nice stop at the Khai Islands for a drink and relaxation on the way home.

But as I started to explore more, and visit more off-the-beaten-path destinations I found that Phi Phi was not my favorite Private Tour.

What Is The Best Private Tour?

Honestly the answer is subjective.  When answering this for our guests I ask them a few questions:

  1. Is this your first visit to Phuket Thailand?
  2. Have you ever done a Private Tour before?
  3. Are you travelling with Kids or Elderly Passengers?

The Best Private Tours In Phuket

Based on the answers to these questions I will then recommend the Private Tour that I think suits the guests the best.  Let me give you an example.

Recently I had a family of 7 inquire about a private tour.  2 passengers were elderly, 2 passengers were under 10 and the rest were adults.  Based on the makeup of this private tour group I suggested that a combined tour of Phang Nga Bay and Khai Island would be suitable.

It is a good mix of snorkeling, sightseeing, kayaking, and mangrove exploring. In my view this tour group, was the best private tour.

On the same day, I had a group of 5 inquire and they wanted the clearest water snorkeling we could find during the season.  As we were in the middle of the wet season and places like Similan were closed, I recommended the guests go to Raya Yai and Noi.  Beautiful beaches, good seas, clear water, and great snorkeling.

So as you can see, the answer to what is the Best Private Tour is a little subjective to who will be onboard with you.  If you’d like to find out the Best Private Tour for you, then feel free to contact us.

Are Similan Islands Open 2023?

LATEST NEWS: Similan Islands Thailand are now fully Open!

The Similan Islands will open on 15th October 2023

The Similan Islands are open for visitors from 15th October to 15th May and closed the rest of the year during the Thailand rainy seasons.

Thailand’s Natural Treasure: The Similan Islands

The Similan Islands became a Thailand national park in 1982. They are an archipelago of 11 islands in the Andaman Sea, 70 km off the coast in Phang Nga Province.

A rich marine life consisting of hard and soft coral reefs, crystal clear waters, and white beaches the Similan Islands are one of the best diving and snorkeling sites in the world.

Nestled in the azure waters of the Andaman Sea, the Similan Islands stand as a testament to the remarkable beauty and ecological importance of Thailand’s natural wonders. Comprising a cluster of eleven islands, the Similans are often regarded as a paradise for nature enthusiasts, divers, and conservationists alike.

Why are the Similan Islands so important?

The Similan Islands are renowned for their exceptional biodiversity. The islands are home to a plethora of unique plant and animal species. Lush forests and diverse ecosystems support a range of wildlife, including monitor lizards, flying foxes, and various bird species.

BUT Underwater, is where the Similans reveal a real mesmerizing world of marine life. The clear waters teem with vibrant coral reefs, making it a prime destination for snorkeling and diving enthusiasts. Divers are treated to sightings of colorful reef fish, majestic manta rays, leopard sharks, and even the elusive whale shark. The health and vitality of these coral reefs are crucial not only for their own sake but also for the larger marine ecosystem they support.

Whale sharks and manta rays are rare sightings, but they show up around March-April.

Coral reefs are often referred to as the “rainforests of the sea,” as they play a pivotal role in maintaining marine biodiversity and providing essential ecosystem services. The Similan Islands‘ coral reefs act as nurseries and habitats for a wide array of marine species, contributing to the overall health of the Andaman Sea’s ecosystem. They also provide coastal protection, helping to buffer against the impacts of storms and rising sea levels.

Moreover, healthy coral reefs contribute to the tourism industry, drawing visitors from around the world to experience the unparalleled beauty of the underwater world. The revenue generated from eco-tourism supports local economies and highlights the symbiotic relationship between conservation and sustainable development.

Why are the Similan Islands closed during Rainy Season?

Recognizing the ecological significance of the Similan Islands, the Thai government designated the area as a Thailand national park in 1982. This status offers legal protection to the islands and their surrounding waters, limiting human impact and ensuring the preservation of their natural beauty.

Regulations on fishing, waste disposal, and tourism activities are enforced to minimize negative environmental effects.

As with many fragile ecosystems, challenges persist. Climate change, overfishing, and pollution pose significant threats to the health of the Similan Islands’ marine and terrestrial environments. Continued efforts are required not only to enforce existing regulations but also to raise awareness and encourage sustainable practices among visitors and local communities.

The Similan Islands stand as a testament to the incredible diversity and beauty that the natural world has to offer. Their significance goes beyond their aesthetic appeal, encompassing their role as a biodiversity hotspot, a crucial component of the marine ecosystem, and a source of sustainable tourism revenue. The importance of preserving these islands cannot be overstated, as they provide a glimpse into the delicate balance of life on Earth and serve as a reminder of our responsibility to protect and conserve our planet’s precious resources for generations to come.

LATEST NEWS: Maya Bay is Open | October 1st, 2023

Maya Bay Has Reopened From 1st October 2023. Please read the full details here: https://5starmarinephuket.com/2023/08/13/maya-bay-opening-1st-october-2023/

Maya Bay is CLOSED but what about Phi Phi?

Today the 1st of August 2023 Maya Bay in Phi Phi, Thailand will be closing its beach for 2 months. The beach being closed at Maya Bay, Phi Phi is to give the Thailand National Park Authorities time to check and assess the effects of tourists being allowed back on the beach during this past high season.

Maya Bay in Phi Phi will open again on the 1st of October 2023.

Is Phi Phi Open?

The bottom line here is that Phi Phi is OPEN.

It is only the beach at Maya Bay that is closed. You can still visit all the other stunning locations at Phi Phi BUT you just cannot walk on Maya Bay Beach.

Pileh Lagoon – Open

Monkey Beach – Open

Nui Beach – Open

Camel Rock – Open

Viking Cave – Open

You can even still enter Maya Bay via the front side. There is a roped-off area marked out by buoys that you go to and get that beautiful picture of Maya Bay. In fact, some might say that this picture looking into the bay is a better picture than from the beach. Plus, for the next two months, there will be no one on the beach to photo-bomb you.

Why is Maya Bay, Phi Phi Famous?

Maya Bay in Phi Phi, Thailand, is famous for several reasons:

“The Beach” Movie:

Maya Bay gained international fame after it was featured in the 2000 movie “The Beach,” directed by Danny Boyle and starring Leonardo DiCaprio. The stunning scenery and crystal-clear waters portrayed in the movie captured the imagination of viewers worldwide, attracting tourists eager to experience the real-life paradise depicted in the film.

Natural Beauty:

Maya Bay is renowned for its breathtaking natural beauty. The bay is surrounded by tall limestone cliffs covered with lush green vegetation, giving it a secluded and picturesque ambiance. The bay’s clear waters and white sandy beach create a postcard-perfect tropical paradise.

Snorkeling and Diving:

The area around Maya Bay offers excellent opportunities for snorkeling and diving. The bay is part of the Phi Phi Islands, known for their diverse marine life and colorful coral reefs, making it a popular destination for underwater enthusiasts.

Phi Phi Islands:

Maya Bay is situated in the Phi Phi Islands archipelago, which is a well-known tourist destination. The Phi Phi Islands offer visitors a chance to explore other beautiful beaches, coves, and viewpoints, making Maya Bay a must-visit spot for travelers exploring the area.

It’s important to note that popularity comes with its downsides. The excessive influx of tourists to Maya Bay, Phi Phi led to significant environmental degradation, threatening the very beauty that made it famous. In response to this environmental impact, the Thai government took measures to preserve the delicate ecosystem and temporarily closed Maya Bay to visitors from mid-2018 onwards. The closure aimed to allow the damaged coral reefs and marine life to recover.

Then after COVID, the government reopened Maya Bay but with strict regulations in place to protect its natural resources.

They also continue to close the beach of Maya Bay every year for 2 months to assist with the environmental situation.

Which Weather Apps Are Reliable In Phuket In 2023?

One of the most frequently asked questions we receive from guests and travellers to Phuket Thailand is:

What Is The Weather Like Right Now?

It’s a fair question to ask.  If you are planning a holiday in Phuket you want to know what weather to expect as this will impact the activities that you will be doing while in Phuket.  After 16 years living in Phuket I have found Phuket’s weather is quite fickle.

Very rarely are any of the Apps right in Phuket.  But here are a few things I use to read the weather and predict what we should expect:

Windy.com is my go-to web platform for seeing the predicted weather and wind conditions for Phuket.  Specifically, I look at the wind report.  As I have a premium subscription, I can see the wind prediction for the next 9 days.

Generally speaking, a low wind condition (under 12 knots) will allow for calmer sea conditions, a lower possibility of rain and the potential for a good day on the sea.  The great part about windy is that it is color coded.

If you see blue wind, this means we are expecting good sea conditions and low wind conditions.  If you see light green, this means slightly increased wind, but still good conditions.

As you move from light green to dark green and then yellow this is an indicator of a high wind condition, potentially rough seas and potentially more rain.

The only accurate predictor of rain in Phuket is the live radar.  The TMD Radar is the best radar to see this as it shows live radar images up to 15 minutes ago.  We use this in the morning of our tours to predict weather we are expecting rain on the tour.

It’s important to note that the wind condition will affect the speed that rain comes towards to Phuket and the direction it is moving.  So I combine the Windy.com readings I get with the live radar.

The AccuWeather website provides forecasts on wind, rain and conditions for up to 1 month. While it is rarely accurate I have found that it is closer to accurate than any other full service weather prediction app or system.

Now I know this all sounds confusing, so if you would prefer us to interpret the weather for you using our experience here in Phuket feel free to contact us any time.
